Robbie... I've tried to keep a watch out for the kids in my Youth Group. When I've had a class on what not to put on Facebook, well, they think that's none of my business. As a YM who came from the business world vs. Christian College I try to tell them, "I wouldn't hire you if I saw ______" on Facebook but usually to no avail. When we hired our last summer intern he had inappropriately listed his father as his son, which when reviewed by my parents---they went bizerk! and I had two weeks worth of explaining to do... If I point out something to a parent usually the next week I'm deFRIENDED by my once youth group member but you have to keep trying to keep them on the narrow path... even if they defriend you!

And I've been told, "YOU AIN'T MY DADDY!" Just keep doing the right thing and you can never go wrong.

FYI: I do not refuse to let disruptive children attend certain events, I just require their parents attend along with them if they choose to go.

One of my parents had this wisdom to share:

"I am not a youth minister, but here is my view anyway. Discipline is necessary, but it is not the role of the pulpit minister, or the family minister, or the youth minister, or the music minister. It is the role of the elders. Take the problem to them."

We talked about it later and that puts the shepherds at work and deflects the issue from us. I liked his response.

Great article! I get really excited about this new thing I want to do and I've got it all planned out in my head...this thing will revolutionize the church! I start explaining it to the parents and they help me see the way of the Lord more perfectly. I'm thinking about writing Proverbs 15.22 on the wall in my office just to remind me that not only do I need help, but that other minds are necessary to make something better. Thanks for your insight.

Robbie, I would add to the last point that "right now" it is for the best. Something that is not a good fit or the right time now, may be in the future. Just my thoughts.

Great writeup. Need to reign myself in sometimes and follow these guidelines myself. Two things I like that was said in this article: 1] "Think slow, think small" - big things start with small steps. You can't go from step 1 to step 794 in one fell swoop. 2] "Let your leadership know." Elders, deacons, and your youth committee do not like surprises, like you said. Communication, even if if feels like you're going overboard with over-informing, is key.

Again, great write up.
